Wells in the Saturated Zone

  • Unconfined and confined aquifers respond differently to wells because of their different pressures.
  • Water in a well in a confined aquifer will rise above the level of the aquifer (static equilibrium water level) because of the weight of the overlying confining layers (the aquifer is under pressure).
  • Water in a well in an unconfined aquifer will be equal to the level of the water table because it is at the same pressure as the surface (or atmospheric) pressure.

  • Pumping water from wells pulls water into the well from all directions around the well.
