Water Movement Time Scales

  • The rate of flow and the amount of time water spends in various parts of the water cycle are influenced by a number of factors, including:  land cover, elevation, topography, temperature, soil type and geology.
  • Generally, groundwater moves very slowly through subsurface materials.  It may take years, decades or even centuries for groundwater to flow through the subsurface to a surface discharge area like a stream.
  • The rate of flow of groundwater varies, depending on the type of soil or subsurface materials.

  • In Michigan,  groundwater may move as much as 3-4 feet per day (in sandy soils) to as little as a couple of inches per day (in clay material).
