Where do Confining Layers Occur?

  • The thickness and lateral extent of confining layers determines how easily contaminants can seep into a confined aquifer.
  • With glacial deposits, it is typical for the confining layers to be disordered.  This more easily allows contaminants to seep into the aquifers.
  • The commonly-held belief that there are large, naturally protected aquifers is largely a myth!
