What Comes Around...Goes Around

The Hydrologic Cycle

WateR moves through the environment in a continuous cycle. It is "recycled" as it travels through the hydrologic cycle. Each part of the cycle can affect another, including the travel of pollutants. Match the parts of the cycle with the proper terms.

Parts of the Cycle Terms

"Every ton of recycled paper saves 7000 gallons of water, about 17 trees, and 4100 kwh of energy (that's enough to power the average home for 6 months).

1. The process by which water becomes vapor in the atmosphere. A. Infiltration
2. Water in saturated soil and rock that moves toward a point of discharge such as a surface water body or a well. B. Surface Runoff
3. Water that falls directly from clouds as rain or snow. C. Water Table
4. Water on the ground surface which moves into a stream or lake without infiltrating into the soil. D. Groundwater Flow
5. The process by which water vapor is released into the atmosphere by living plants. E. Discharge Area
6. The downward flow or seepage of water through the pores or spaces of rock or soil. F. Evaporation
7. The upper surface of the saturated zone (soil where water completely soaks soil or rock and fills all the cracks and spaces). G. Transpiration
8. An area in which water is lost from the saturated zone. H. Precipitation
